Are Home Workouts Useful?

I love my home gym! I have 10 and 20 lb kettlebells, dumbbells too. My best piece of equipment is my ab wheel; I love that thing. I’ve had it for almost 10 years. This time of year I use my treadmill or elliptical too since I don’t like running in the snow. Definitely worth the investment. I also agree with someone else’s post about exercise videos; it’s great if you get in a rut.

I have a garage gym setup with a squat rack, barbells, and dumbbells. I’ve made more progress changing my appearance lifting heavy weights 4x a week for 35-45 min sessions in the past few years than I did in decades of martial arts and combat sports. I’ve always been lean and lanky, and all the martial arts and calisthenics I’d do in class definitely helped, but focusing on heavy weights in my home gym has really changed the way I look.

Yes, I can say that they do, though the gym is much more effective, so go there if you can.

I started at home for the same reason. No dumbbells, just a mat in the beginning. Then I bought a set of dumbbells.
And then because the gym is literally in front of where I work, I started going to the gym.
But if my next job does not have a gym close, I will go back to working out at home.

If you don’t do anything right now, then yes, 1 is more than 0.

I love working out from home! Especially with kids. It’s just easier for me. I get my youngest set up in the playroom with toys and whatnot and get to it.
I do workouts from YouTube. I follow a few different women and do everything from kickboxing to strength training to dance cardio to HIIT workouts, yoga, and walking workouts. I definitely see changes in my body, and I just overall feel good. I exercise more for the health aspects vs wanting a 6-pack. So I usually do workouts I enjoy like dance cardio and kickboxing. I have various sized weights and kettlebells to do with the strength training and just use whatever weight feels good that day.

Today I did a 15-minute full-body strength training with MrandMrsMuscle and then did a 5-minute cardio HIIT with MadFit and a yoga with Adrienne cooldown.

I also really enjoy workouts from
The Studio by Jamie Kinkeade
KyraPro
GrowwithJo
WorktourAshoff
Katie Austin
Popsugarfitness

I also build workouts on YouTube. You can make playlists, so I have a ton of different workouts I built that I can just click on and go. All with a warm-up, strength training, cardio, abs/core, and cooldown. Or I just choose a 20 to 30-minute from the above and go. Also, this may be silly, but when I clean, I wear ankle weights:woman_shrugging::rofl: and I wear the ankle weights when I’m doing a lighter workout like the walking workouts that GrowwithJo and KyraPro do, as well as using smaller dumbbells to use when it makes sense.

As a busy working mom who works a not consistent retail schedule, it’s just so much easier to fit in a workout at home. I usually do 20 to 30 minutes each day and then try to walk for at least 20 to 30 minutes on lunch breaks.

So yes, you will 100% see results from working out from home.

I got a $200 under-the-desk treadmill and just use it like a regular one. Popped it in front of the TV, and it’s a great investment. I have that and a couple of weights, and I really prefer it over the gym. Saves me time and is convenient. I will say, though, that I had started working out regularly at home before I got it by watching YouTube videos (like GrowwithJo), learning moves, and then doing them while I watch shows.

Definitely if you put the work in. I personally think it may be more tough just because it’s obviously not the same setting or equipment as the gym, but I’ve seen the same great results from working out at home as I have from the gym.

If you are serious about fitness, you should have a weight pile at your house. There are no magic weights at the gym. Weights are weights. The gym has specialized equipment only necessary for specialized reasons. Just getting fit is not a reason. Fitness as a social activity is. Special equipment for competitions, recovery, etc., are reasons. Don’t think there is some magic spell making you fit at the gym.

Yes, they are helpful and much better than doing no activities at all.

I workout at home and love it. I agree with what others have said, though. You get out of it what you put in. I use several Beachbody programs, so I don’t get bored, but also use exercise dice to put together my own 30-minute HIIT programs when I want something different.

Look at farmers, fishermen, and construction guys. Most never stepped into a gym nor worked out at home. And many are strong as hell. Muscles have no clue where or how they are stimulated. And functional strength normally keeps you healthier.

Works better, in my opinion. At the gym, I’m always distracted, end up chatting, having to wait for things, etc. I set up my own in my garage, and it’s a lot better. More intense too, as I can jump from one exercise directly into another when needed.

The process of training is like filling an empty bucket with grains of rice. Every successful session is one grain of rice. It takes a while to see the rice piling up, but eventually, one day, the bucket of rice will be full.

Home workouts are workouts, just as gym workouts are workouts. Your efforts and consistency are the only things that truly matter here.

Good luck!

Sooo… waste half an hour watching TV and snacking instead then?

Why would I do that?

That was my not so subtle way of saying doing something is better than being a lazy couch potato. Plus, you can do tons at home in 30 min. If I don’t go to Orangetheory, CrossFit, my gym, or run outside, I’ll sometimes do a 20 min full body barbell workout. There are tons of them on YouTube you can follow along with.

@Dru
Oh, thank you; I tend to be a little stupid with obvious stuff.
