Should I begin using a shovel as a substitute for a barbell?

I bought two 10 kg adjustable dumbbells, but I can only stack up to 15 kg on each, and it’s starting to feel too easy. Since I can’t afford additional weights or make plates myself, should I start using a shovel and add two buckets of sand and weights to continue progressing?

Many people use a combination of loop resistance bands with weights or just the bands alone. I use Weller PowerBands, which are quite affordable—$50 for 130 kg. Scientific studies indicate that they can be as effective as weights. Just make sure to train to failure for the best results.

Pick up a 5 or 6-foot piece of 3/4" or 1" diameter pipe from your local hardware store.

A shovel would be unevenly weighted on one side, which could create an imbalance that might not be ideal.

Yeah, you’re right. I tried squatting with it, and the bucket on one side fell, causing the shovel to hit me on the jaw.
