I’m just starting my fitness journey and I want to know what exercises beginners can do to get in shape. I’ve heard that lifting weights is a faster way to get fit, but I’m struggling to come up with specific exercises to do at home.
Get everything you can. Creating a home gym is one of the best investments I’ve made.

I feel the same. But I would love to access gym machines and regular dumbbells for my assistance workouts.
@Piper
I prefer traditional dumbbells over adjustable ones, but the space-saving aspect of the adjustable ones is great. My top investments for home workouts are adjustable dumbbells, an adjustable weight bench, and a plyo box. The social aspect you miss in the gym, like seeing everyone working toward their goals, is what I miss most.
Start with basic bodyweight exercises like push-ups, sit-ups, planks, squats, crunches, and lunges. Weights speed up muscle building, but when you’re just starting out, you don’t really need them. You can hold a bucket of rocks or something while squatting for increased resistance. Fancy equipment is fun, but it isn’t necessary.

Absolutely, she’s fantastic for home workouts.
For cardio, you can run or jump rope. For strength training, check out r/bodyweightfitness if you don’t have weights.
Almost anything can be done with just one pair of dumbbells.
Look for a workout called the 7-minute workout. You do it three times in a row for more than 20 minutes, and all you need is a chair. You should also check out a YouTuber called Growinannas—she has good music and awesome workouts. Running is my favorite, but I guess it’s not for everyone.

Growinannas is indeed great!
I’m 46 and did her workouts all last winter, and I was in amazing shape this summer. Now I’m back to running, but I’ll definitely return to her videos when it gets cold.

Also, investing in resistance bands with anchors is a smart move. They are affordable, take up little space, and are highly versatile for full-body workouts. Great value for beginners, and they’ll still be useful as you advance your fitness.

Just adding that Nerd Fitness is a fantastic starting resource for those new to exercising.
I do workout videos and have bought dumbbells to use as my weights. I’ve noticed changes in my figure. I’m not super strong yet, but I’m working on it.
Start with walking and practicing yoga on YouTube. Walking is excellent low-impact cardio, while yoga helps with your mobility and flexibility. After that, consider getting kettlebells and using them for strength training. Check out /r/kettlebell for more info.
I began with just a yoga mat, focusing on strength stability exercises. Look up stability strength training on YouTube. After that, I acquired kettlebells in weights of 12kg, 16kg, and 20kg, all second-hand. I would do Turkish get-ups, swings, and presses. Then I picked up a jump rope and running shoes, along with a bike for £14 and a turbo trainer for £15. I created a full exercise setup for under £300, able to be used at home or outside.
I follow HIIT workouts and bought adjustable dumbbells with a bench.
Push-ups, pull-ups, and ring dips are great options.
