Should I start using a shovel as a substitute for a barbell?

I bought 2x10 kg adjustable dumbbells, but stacking up to 15 kg on each is becoming too easy. Since I can’t afford more plates or equipment, would it be a good idea to use a shovel with two sand-filled buckets as a way to increase resistance?

Many people use a combination of loop resistance bands with weights or just bands alone. I use Weller PowerBands, which are quite affordable at $50 for 130 kg. Studies have shown that they can be as effective as weights, as long as you train to failure.

Get a 5 or 6-foot length of 3/4" or 1" diameter pipe from your local hardware store.

Using a shovel might lead to weight imbalance, which could be problematic.

Yeah, you’re right. I tried squatting with it, and the bucket on one side fell, causing the shovel to hit me in the jaw.
