Looking for the best pushup routine

Hello everyone, I’m new to this forum and still learning how to work out. I’ve been doing 40 push-ups every two days, and I want to know if that’s enough for my chest and arms or if I need to make some changes. I take martial arts classes every day, but I feel like it’s not enough for my upper body.

Can anyone share an effective push-up routine

Try out diamond, wide grip, elevated feet, offset, and clap push-ups. I think that’s about as varied as you can get

What benefit does using different arm heights provide

@Rylan
It’s a way to focus more on one arm. It allows one arm to do more work, but not all of it

To increase your push-ups, just keep raising the total reps you do each time. If you did 40 today, aim for 50 next time, and then keep adding. You can’t do the same workout and expect to see progress

That makes sense

Check out this fitness community for tips. Doing only 40 push-ups every couple days will lead to a plateau. Switch things up with close and wide push-ups, and aim to work up to one-handed push-ups

Exactly. I was going to mention balancing pushing exercises with pulling ones, along with trying harder variations, but it’s all there in the FAQ of that community. Check it out here, OP

@Clove
Thanks a lot, everyone!

How can I improve my breathing? I either do 40 while holding my breath after every 3 or 4 reps or do 20 with breathing every rep. I can’t figure out the best way to breathe for longer sets of push-ups

@Daryl
Working on your core will help with that

How does that help me know when to breathe? Just curious

When you’re engaging your core while doing various exercises, it’s tough to breathe deeply. But if you practice core workouts, it’ll gradually get easier to breathe naturally. A detailed explanation would be better, but that’s the gist

@Gentry
I get that; it’s just confusing because I can hold planks for a long time, but 40 push-ups messes me up. Pull-ups are easy, and I breathe well with them. Push-ups have puzzled me for a while now. Maybe I’m overthinking it

@Daryl
Try relaxing your core while doing push-ups. I tried some quick push-ups and could breathe easily when my core was relaxed

I’ll definitely check that during my next set. Thanks

Breathe when you reach the top of the push-up

@Gentry
Every single rep?

Do what feels right for you; I usually take a breath every five reps
